Questions people ask6 short answers
How much experience do I need to get insurance on a new authority?
Most insurers that write new ventures want 2 years of verifiable CDL experience. A smaller group will quote with 1 year, at a higher price. Under a year, options are very limited.
Why is insurance so expensive for a new authority?
With no history under your own authority, insurers have nothing to price from but your driving record and experience. Price usually comes down at renewal once you have a clean year, real loss runs and a clean new entrant safety audit.
Do I need insurance before my authority is active?
Yes. FMCSA won't activate your operating authority until an insurer files proof of your liability coverage (form BMC-91X) and your BOC-3 process agent designation is on file.
How much liability does a new authority need?
The federal minimum is $750,000 for general freight, and $1 million or $5 million for hazmat depending on the material. Most brokers and shippers ask for $1,000,000 and $100,000 in cargo.
Can I start a new authority hauling hazmat?
Technically yes, but very few insurers write hazmat on a new authority, and the required limits are much higher. Most carriers build a year or two hauling other freight first.
Does experience as a leased-on owner-operator count?
Your driving experience counts, because it's on your license and MVR. What you don't have yet is loss history under your own authority, which is why the first year is still priced as a new venture.
